Packages Missing - opkg update fails!

Just got a new routerstation. No problem getting the network configured and getting connectivity to it.

Upon attempting "opkg update":

root@OpenWrt:~# opkg update
Downloading downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/ar71xx/packages/Packages.gz
Connecting to downloads.openwrt.org (195.56.146.238:80)
wget: server returned error: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found
Collected errors:
* opkg_download: ERROR: Command failed with return value 1: `wget --passive-ftp    -P /tmp/opkg-fP5TWm ' target='_blank'>http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/ar71xx/packages/Packages.gz'[/code]
Whoa, the directory referenced in /etc/opkg.conf doesn't exist on the openwrt website!

So I modify opkg.conf to:

src/gz snapshots downloads.openwrt.org/kamikaze/8.09/ar71xx/packages/
dest root /
dest ram /tmp
lists_dir ext /var/opkg-lists
option overlay_root /jffs

This works for most packages EXCEPT the kernel modules. The snapshot that Ubiquiti chose to load on my board includes kernel 2.6.26.8-ar71xx-1 whereas all the kernel modules in the current kamakaze 8.09 package directory are built against 2.6.26.5-ar71xx-1.

Sheesh! Not going to make this EASY are you?!?

Now I guess the only option is to get the whole toolchain setup and begin compiling, a messy and long process just to get some basic functionality out of this thing. I'm NOT HAPPY that the guys at Ubiquiti have decided to make this as big of a pain in the a**
as possible. I will not be buying or recommending any more Ubiquiti products if this is how they support their products!

If Ubiquiti wants to load a non-mainstream release, then at the very least they should support it with pre-compiled packages!!! How hard would that be?!? Put the packages on the Ubiquiti web server and update opkg.conf to point to them. Voila, IT SIMPLY WORKS
OUT OF THE BOX!

DD-Wrt is a great package, and I personally use it on my own wireless router. It is awesome at being a router, and the UI is amazing, but I was under the impression (correct me if I'm wrong) that DD-Wrt's mission is to be a router only, and is also not fully
open. I'll give it another look though.

I am looking to develop an embedded access control and security platform. I've used OpenWRT before and it is well-suited as a general-purpose Linux distribution for small devices, so that's why I chose it. It's also what Ubiquiti chose to load and (presumably)
support on their products, but obviously they not only don't support it, but ship a broken build as well.

Sadly, I am going to abandon the routerstation and move to a manufacturer that has a working BSP and at least provides something that you can develop with out of the box.

Has anyone played with the Sheevaplug yet? Uses the Marvell kirkwood SOC running at 1.2ghz, has USB2 Host, GigE, 512M of DRAM and 512M of Flash. Ships for $99 and the whole thing is built into a little wall-plug power supply. I'm going to try this next.

BTW: I downloaded the current OpenWRT snapshot and tried to roll my own, and about every 10th package breaks when compiling with all the routerstation options enabled. Why did Ubiquiti put this on a shipping board instead of a stable branch that actually has
usable packages?!?

DD-WRT is great. Shame it broke away from the OpenWRT guys. Together they'd be even greater.

Dunt matter much, as it's all based on the same work, just that the GUI version is making one party some cash, except on Broadcom kit.

The Challenge thing will break a lot of that (hopefully) as the new GUI will work on OpenWRT, which is free, and it will be free too, as in Open Source.

That doesn't mean that some bits cannot be charged for of course, but at least you'll get the chance to roll-your-own without paying a bean.

I had the SheevaPlug for about 2 hours before I jacked it up. It was my own fault of course. It came with Ubuntu Jaunty and I had a complete setup of Zoneminder running on it. To be honest, it's possible to run Debian on the Routerstation from a memory stick
so in my opinion the RouterStation has an advantage in that it's got the wireless cards.
