AnnouncementNEWT driver has been transferred to VS2010 as part of load test and unit test component, available to public in VS2010 beta1 package. We are busy supporting this transfer work and also working on some minor bug fixes of NEWT UI. A new (hopefully
final) release of NEWT will be deployed to toolbox after the VS 2010 driver reaches golden stage, which is decided by VS team.

Description

NEWT (Network Emulator for WindowsToolkit) is a software-based emulator which can emulate the behavior of both wired and wireless networks using a reliable physical link, such as an Ethernet.
A variety of network attributes are incorporated into the NEWT emulation model, including round-trip time across the network (latency), the amount of available
bandwidth, queuing behavior, packet loss, reordering of packets, anderror propagations. NEWT also provides flexibility in filtering network packets based on IP addresses or protocols such as TCP, UDP, and ICMP.

NEWT can be used by network-based application developers and testers to emulate desired test environment, assess performance, predict the impact of change, or make decisions about technology optimization. When compared to hardware test beds, NEWT is a much
cheaper and a more flexible solution.

As of Oct. 2008, NEWT latest release has passed full SWI and CPx check. NEWT was included in Games for Windows Live SDK, and Xbox XDK release package. Visual Studio team is working on integrating core NEWT features into next release of Visual Studio (Contact:
Ed Glas). Besides these public release channels, NEWT remains as an internal MS tool.
