Proactive or reactive way you’d like to take if you are allow to choosed.
As a DBA you are definitely familiar with the proactive way to tune the DB or do something for DB to prevent the DB in a bad situation in the future. But most of time you are possible to deal with issue reactively because you are expert whom the people will ask for help from when people encounter the problems.
But I still think the people who know how to take the proactive measure is a really expert just like the Chinese tradition medicine.
I like the chinese tradition medical way to heal the disease because it bring a lot of benefit to chinese.
the chinese tradition medical way was invented to cater to the Chinese body and chinese health at least. Sometimes you will find you are not in good health but when you go to hospital and check the body condition and also blood check and the doctor can not find any thing wrong from the check result.
But you know you are in sub health you need to be tuned from some aspects.
then the chinese tradition medical way is coming for this situation.
the Chinese tradition medical way stress the proactive measure to prevent the problem or illness from happening really.
Just cure it when a little sign suggest it will become a serious one.
It need everything is harmonious balance inside your body.
and also the balance need to be changed according to the external factor.
They won't make the people health in very bad situation if the people come to see him as soon as he feels a little small thing wrong with his body.
it is similar to the DBA job.
If the database in a very bad situation it might be a very bad performance or a bad situation needing to be recovered without enough backup files or archive log or redo log loss.
Then no matter how famous the DBA is he will feel hard to deal with the situation.
but if a DBA can do some proactive measure to prevent the bad situation happening then the DB will never get chance to make it run in such case.
So based on the above facts there are usually two kind of DBA working in this are.
the reactive one and proactive one.
The reactive DBA can handle everything once he is noticed.
He usually is very busy with dealing with the issue.
the co workers prefer to ask him help because it seems that he can tackle everything problem and can provide the service on demand.
He earns a good reputation through his hard work. Maybe he wants to take some proactive action but he has no time to do it.
He always gets a tight schedule. He have no choice except to get everything done in a hurry.
After all take a proactive plan is not so easy as you think.
Sometime you make a good plan to resist something happen accroding your prediction but maybe you do a lot of thing but anyway it does't not happen.
It means that taking proactive action need more effort than the reactive one .
for the Reactive action something has already happen and it is easy to find the prescription to cure it and it is easier to judge whether it is effective measure or not by every common person but for the proactive measure it is hard to find the measure because it needs design several schemas to prevent it happen in several way.
It is possible it predict it will happen but it is hard to tell when it happen and in what way it happen.
Also even you measure it works it is not easier to be agreed that you way has already worked by every common one.
Maybe it only an expert can help recognize it is worthwhile in this situation.
So my idea is to combine the two way and apply them in an appropriate way per your experenice.
Only to take too much proactive action will make you hard to get reputation becase you do to much the behind sence work and on the other hand if you take too much reactive action then you will feel too busy to have no time to take breather.
It is high time for DBA go do something in an innovative way.
