Over the years many experts have proposed various definitions for software testing, some common definitions of testing including:

...the process of executing a program with the intent of finding errors, "Execute a program or system with the intention of finding errors."

Software testing is a process of analyzing of operating software for the purpose of finding bugs.

May experts in the fields seem to advocate the primary purpose of testing is to find defects; as many as possible as early in the software development lifecycle as possible. Unfortunately there are 2 fundamental problems with this simplistic interpretation of software testing.

Finding as many as defects as we can as early as possible can make testing a numbers game. Does a large bug count imply testing is doing a good job? High numbers of bugs don't always mean the testing efforts is finding the most important ceritical issues as early as possible. Another potential side effect of simply finding as many as bugs as possible includes artificial explosion of bug count.

definition: an explaination of the meaning of a word or phrase, especially in a dictionary ; the act of stating the meanings of words and phrases.

execute: to be a piece of work, perform a duty, put a plan into action, etc.

primary: main; most important; basic

defect: a fault in something or in the way it has been made which means that it is not perfect.

fundamental: 1) forming the soure or base from which everything else is made; not able to be divided any further.

2) serious and very important; affecting the most central and important parts of something

simplistic: making a problem, situation, etc.seem less difficult or complicated than it really is

interpretation: the particular way in which something is understood or explained

imply: to make it seem likely that something is true or exits

critial: extremely important because a future situation will be affected by it

issue: a problem or worry that somebody has with something

potential: that can develop into something or developed in the future
