In some societies, parents choose marriage partners for their children. What advantages, if any, are there in arranged marriages?
As love marriage is becoming more and more popular in the society, many countries no longer adopt arranged marriage as part of their culture. However, such tradition is still very common in the Middle East and South Asia. In my opinion, there must be certain solid reasons for continue practicing arranged marriages rather than love marriage in our modern society.
Parents know their children better than anyone else; they know what is suitable for their children even though sometimes their children may not be aware of that. In Indian culture, numerology and the positions of stars at birth is often used to predict the success of a particular match. By doing that, parents are able to find partners who match their children the best, depending on the personality, life style, religious belief as well as values of both partners.
Moreover, parents are more experienced and rational than their children, thus they tend to be more practical when choosing partners for their children. One good example could be among most of the Indian Hindus, reputation, vocation, as well as the background of the groom’s family are often overlooked before couple gets married. Therefore, children, especially girls, are more likely to have a relatively higher standard of living after arranged marriage.
Through arranged marriage, partners that parents choose are usually someone they know, or at least someone they have heard of with a good reputation. Thus it is more reliable and there are less chances of cheating could happen. One of my friends from Pakistan said that in her country, parents usually choose partners either from their friend’s children or children of their distant family, she felt much secured in choosing a partner through this way.
Children can concentrate on their academy or career as they don't have to worry about choosing partners for themselves. Even where courtship practices are becoming fashionable in some Middle East countries nowadays, young adults tend to view arranged marriage as an option they can fall back on if they are unable or unwilling to find a spouse on their own. They don’t have to spend neither time nor effort on courtship; instead, by focusing on study or job, they are more likely to achieve higher than those who have to choose partners themselves.
Unanimously, arranged marriage has its unique advantages for it to remain popular among certain countries.Through arranged marriage, the idea of “match with each other” is highly emphasized and thus children will tend to marry to the ones who suit them the best. Moreover, a higher standard of living is often achieved and there are greater chances for both partners to success in their career as well.
